The School
The School - La Escuela Oficial de La Union, is located in the community of La Union near the city of Coatepeque, Guatemala. Coatepeque is about 50 kilometers from the Mexican Border. The school has a staff of approximately 20 teachers and one principal. The principal is Cora Nohemi Castillo Bonilla de Morales. She has been principal for eight years and is a brilliant educator. She is the "guiding light" at the school and her leadership skills are remarkable. She works long days for very little pay because she is truly committed to breaking the cycle of poverty through literacy. The school is an elementary school and holds classes from kindergarten to grade six.
There are approximately 800 children at the school and sadly, only about twenty proper classrooms. Much of the learning goes on outside in the recess area. During the rainy season many classes are simply "washed out." Access Education would like to change that by providing additions to the school.
