La Union
Access Education - Guatemalan Children's Fund originated as Glendy's Wish so we begin in Glendy's pueblo, the village of La Union which is approximately 8 kilometers from the city of Coatepeque. This is a region rich in coffee plantations and located about 50 kilometers from the Mexican border.
La Union is an extremely poor pueblo with a very high rate of illiteracy. An elementary school exists here but many children are not able to attend simply because of the prohibitive cost of books and a required school uniform. There are approximately 2,000 children in La Union. At a cost of $75.00 for each child we can provide the necessary books, a uniform and enroll one child in school. For $15,000 we can send every one of La Union's children to school.
